The proposed 2024 Transportation Sales Tax Referendum was not approved by voters on November 05, 2024. This page has been archived.

The goals of the proposed 2024 Sales and Use Tax Referendum (the penny tax) are to address Beaufort County infrastructure needs through the completion of transportation and mobility projects amidst growth in our region. According to the latest census data, South Carolina is the fastest-growing state in the nation, and Beaufort County is one of the fastest-growing counties within South Carolina. The referendum question, to be placed on the ballot in November 2024, will ask voters to approve a one percent (1%) sales and use tax in Beaufort County beginning the following year (2025) and continuing for ten (10) years, or until $950 million in funds are raised, whichever occurs first.

There is a large list of projects that have been identified by the STAC - view them on the handouts or at https://beaufortcountypenny.com/proposed-2024-transportation-sales-and-use-tax-referendum/#tab-id-3

That question was referencing specifically some of the vaguer projects that have been identified by name only, like the specific municipal projects and Safety and Traffic Flow items. The Citizens Led Oversight Committee will oversee the referendum projects, schedules, and expenditures.

The specific projects under the municipal list are not yet identified: we know that the municipalities have transportation projects within their jurisdictions they will need funding for over the next ten years. The funds and expenditures will be determined by the Citizens Oversight Committee.

Safety and Traffic Flow projects are not all identified at the moment, however; the County is working on several projects that would fit into this category, such as a channelized right turn lane from Ribaut Road onto Lady’s Island Drive.

The Sidewalk projects encompass the remainder of the 2018 Transportation Sales Tax sidewalk/multi-use pathways that are currently unfunded or underfunded.

Hi there! We have the complete and updated project list now available above under "Documents," but I believe the project missing from the above was the $50m allotted for Greenbelts.
