Hilton Head Island Airport is thrilled to announce the commencement of Phase I of its Terminal Improvements Project, aimed at modernizing and enhancing the airport's facilities to meet the growing needs of passengers and the surrounding community. The project is spearheaded by the architecture firm The Wilson Group, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, and will be executed by Edison Foard. The contract, valued at $30,898,447.83, is projected to span two years and is funded through a combination of FAA Grants, SC Aeronautics Grants, State Funds secured by the local delegation and airport revenue.

    Key Work Items Accomplished

    • New terminal vehicle lane curbing installed.
    • Parking lot side pedestrian sidewalk installed.
    • Outer new arrival/departure lanes graded and prepped for asphalt.
    • EV charging stations (x2) site work complete.
    • Steel structure for new TSA screening checkpoint area, exit lane, & boarding gate area 80% complete.
    • Bioretention stormwater facility work 50% complete.
    • Water main line tie-in complete.
    • New dumpster pad installed.


    Important Coordinating Items

    • Continue re-routing passengers through construction zones.
    • Demo remaining traffic lane and pave.
    • Approve interior graphics, light fixtures and accessories.
    • Begin parking lot study and prep gate locations.
    • Next big step will be framers inside new building.


    Near-Term Look-Ahead

    • REMOVE TEMP ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE LANES
    • COMPLETE STEEL INSTALL
    • INSTALL REMAINING SLAB

    Key Work Items Accomplished

    • Arrival and Departure lanes have been re-routed. Down to single lane.
    • First 2 rows of parking spaces have been cleared and removed.
    • All underground facilities have been installed, connecting the current facilities to the new terminal.
    • 90% of the designed steel on site.
    • Previously installed “dry” pond correction complete.
    • Concrete colors/texture and window tinting approved.

    • Arrange parking lot after lane paving to include handicap and new rental car locations.
    • Traffic Control and night work monitoring.
    • Approve interior graphics, light fixtures and accessories.
    • Begin parking lot study and prep gate locations.
